Chasing The High

The Blackhawk soared through the sweltering heat of the jungle, its blades slicing the humid air as it banked into the low-hanging sun. Richard T. Sanchez gripped his weapon, fingers tight against the cold metal, eyes locked on the green blur of the canopy below. The jungle, a sea of life and death, sped by beneath them—trails of smoke rising from hidden shelters in the dense underbrush. The sound of the helicopter’s engines drowned out the communications buzzing in his ear, but Sanchez didn’t mind.

It never got old. The adrenaline. The rush. It was a hunger that coursed through him, deeper than any meal he’d ever had. A hunger that, for a moment, erased everything else. The need for power. For control. For the release that only moments like this could provide. It was a release he needed after three weeks back in the States—three weeks of pretending, of fitting into a world that never understood.

They could never understand. Not the way he did.

The war on drugs, they’d call it—a noble cause, a lofty concept. But those in charge never came here. Never saw the decimated villages. Never felt the suffocating heat. Never tasted the fear that choked every breath in the jungle. They never saw how big the problem really was.

Sanchez’s mind wandered as the Blackhawk cut through the sky. He remembered his childhood—those same battles, those same struggles. The hunger for control, for dominance in the chaos of his world.

The world had always been like this: a messy tangle of decisions made by others, decisions that led to endless complications. He had learned that early.

But now, it was his world. His rules. His decisions.

His men. His solution.

A voice crackled through his headset: “Target’s within range.”

Sanchez’s gaze shifted across the compartment. His team. They were ready, their faces hardened, determined. The jungle below was alive with movement. In the clearing ahead, brightly colored t-shirts flashed as men scattered into the trees, attempting to escape. It was too late. Sanchez knew this. He always knew it.

“Run,” he whispered to himself, his lips curling into a half-smile. “Go ahead and run. You have nowhere to go.”

And in that moment, he realized this wasn’t just a mission. This was his past, his mistakes, his regrets—all of it—chasing him. But this time, he wasn’t running. This time, he was erasing it all.
